Meet Me on Salem — Downtown Apex Streetscape Signage Concept

“Meet Me on Salem” imagines a cohesive, welcoming identity for downtown Apex, extending a distinctive streetscape message from banners and wayfinding to market and storefront graphics. An independent Harbor Creative concept, not an approved municipal project.

Meet Me on Salem — Downtown Apex Streetscape Signage Concept — project artwork

Concept project created by Harbor Creative to demonstrate our approach and capabilities. This work was not commissioned by the organization represented.

The brief

A memorable downtown identity should do more than identify a location. It should make the street inviting to explore, connect individual businesses to a recognizable place, and give residents and visitors a reason to return. Inspired by the character of Salem Street in downtown Apex, Harbor Creative developed “Meet Me on Salem” as an independent streetscape and placemaking concept. The proposed visual system brings a coordinated forest-green and ivory palette to banners, directional signage, market displays, storefront applications, and smaller shop-friendly graphics. Eight illustrative renderings are now included in the project gallery, demonstrating how the idea could appear at different scales. This is self-initiated speculative work, not an active solicitation, a Town of Apex commission, an approved design, or installed signage. Any official identity use, specifications, and location approvals would require separate review.

Objective

Explore a coordinated downtown identity that welcomes visitors, supports local business visibility, and makes Salem Street feel like one connected destination while respecting Apex’s established civic identity.

The approach

The creative direction is built around a place-first visual identity: deep forest green and warm ivory, elegant serif headlines paired with clear sans-serif information, and restrained botanical and contour-line details. The concept respects downtown's architectural character while giving the “Meet Me on Salem” message a recognizable presence across multiple formats. The eight renderings already in the gallery illustrate streetscape banners, pedestrian wayfinding, market signage, storefront applications, counter graphics, and a small door decal. Each is presented as a conceptual design study rather than a manufactured or installed sign. The system would require municipal review, verification of any official identity use, accessibility and legibility testing, site measurements, fabrication details, and any applicable permissions before implementation.
