A community journal has an opportunity to be more than a delivery vehicle for announcements. When the content is useful, visually engaging, and distinctly connected to residents' everyday lives, a publication can become something worth keeping and revisiting. Willow Creek Community Journal's Spring 2026 edition was developed around “It's Bloom Season,” an editorial theme that connects outdoor living with practical seasonal guidance. The publication brings together resident-focused messaging, container gardening, porch styling, lawn-care ideas, and water-conscious tips within a cohesive magazine layout. Photography, pacing, accessible page hierarchy, and recurring content formats create a visual language that can support future issues with new seasonal themes. The project demonstrates editorial and publication design; readership or engagement results have not been established.
Objective
Create a seasonal publication with a clear, welcoming editorial voice, balancing important community messages with practical, engaging content residents can use at home.
The approach
Harbor treated the journal as an editorial publication rather than a standard community newsletter. The Spring issue was built around the theme “It’s Bloom Season,” with content focused on renewal and outdoor spaces. The visual direction pairs large lifestyle photography with clear feature sections, practical how-to content, and shorter tips so the magazine can move between inspiration and useful resident education. The publication also establishes a structure that could be carried into future seasonal editions with a new editorial focus each time.
